Packages of frozen salmon donated by BBNC

“It’s a rainy, fishing type of day,” a young man said. His description was apt—and relatable.

Staff members from Bristol Bay Native Corporation (BBNC) and United Way of Anchorage heard this comment during his welcome on behalf of Alaska Child & Family. We were traveling together for the day as BBNC donated 300 pounds of salmon to five community organizations. Abused Women’s Aid in Crisis (AWAIC), Bean’s Cafe, Covenant House Alaska, Alaska Native Medical Center and, of course, Alaska Child & Family each received 60 pounds of salmon from Bristol Bay Seafood Investments.

As the young man concluded his remarks, he noted a bit sheepishly, “Pecan crusted salmon is my favorite preparation.” Many people smiled and likely agreed.

BBNC prides itself on investing in Alaska’s people, land and resources. It preserves Native culture and furthers education and economic initiatives. BBNC also runs a workplace campaign for United Way. Our relationship with BBNC made connecting them to nonprofits that would benefit from salmon donations easy. We often work with organizations that have the need and space for fresh food.

“In 2016, when the Legislature declared Aug. 10 Alaska Wild Salmon Day, we celebrated by hosting a picnic with our shareholders,” shared Andria Agli, Sr. Vice President of Shareholder and Corporate Relations. “That event sparked an idea. Let’s share our salmon with others.”

BBNC’s shareholders come first and inform its corporate values and philanthropic activities. It focuses its efforts on two areas that we also champion.

  • Health and social services
  • Education, employment and training

Our shared values make us great partners. Like us, BBNC empowers Alaskans to help Alaskans. We’re committed to improving lives by ensuring Alaskans can access medical care and earn dependable wages.

On Oct. 2, BBNC is kicking off its 2024 workplace campaign. Its 97 employees in five communities can pledge to support United Ways and Alaska nonprofits. Tamrit Howell, BBNC’s Human Resources Manager, is serving as its Employee Campaign Coordinator. She’s focusing on educating her colleagues about the impact of their donations to help increase how much BBNC raises before its campaign wraps up on Nov. 30.

Tamrit says, “I’m confident the enthusiasm of our employees will help us exceed our campaign goals.” Thank you, BBNC, for your support and all you do for Alaska!
